Won Jung Gak

9655 - 62 Ave.
Edmonton, AB
*Have no idea if it even has a phone number!

This place is totally off the beaten path! It's in the industrial area close to Argyle in Edmonton. You would never think to have a restaurant built into an autobody mechanic shop. It was converted to a restaurant by a Korean family about two years ago. I think they just put up a sign recently. It is ghetto! If you want good Chinese style Korean food, this is the place to go. It's definitely mama papa.

The decor...absolutely repulsive with fake flowers, tacky Chinese decorations, and art placed in weird places and paintings and such that has no theme what so ever. But it's definitely all about the food. I ordered the #2 (jam bong - spicy seafood noodle soup) and my company ordered their own bowl of noodles or rice. We ordered #38 (chicken with red pepper and garlic sauce) to share, that was delicious. It's a recommendation from my Korean friends, usually people would order the sweet n' sour chicken, but this was a better option. The seats were not comfortable at all; service was terrible; 3 of us got our dishes before the last person did and they didn't bother to figure out something was wrong or ask or anything. Tea took forever as well as our water. The Korean side dishes that you usually get at a Korean restaurant was fine, minimal, but that's what they usually serve. I've been here a few times.

But...food was great! The jam bong can honestly be a "last meal" for me. The quantities I wish was a bit bigger for the price I pay. Not sure if there's MSG in it, haven't really figured that one out yet. I normally react to MSG, but haven't once been affected by this restaurant. The chicken was also pricey for the amount we had, but the sauce was light, flavourful and refreshing to offset the spiciness of my noodles. I definitely recommend this Korean restaurant over most, if not all, if you're looking for noodles.

  1. I've had the chajangmyun here and it was really good! I was so surprised to find this little hole in the wall place, and every time I come to Edmonton I definitely have to stop here for a meal.

  2. The kimchi here is as good as any I have had. The beef bone soup is a generous serving and so delicious I have tried nothing else. I find little fault with the speed of the service. The woman waiting tables (does she ever have any help?) more than makes up for her small English vocab with her brisk serious approach to her work, winning smile and helpful attitude. DRA

  3. It's very interesting actually. after Korean war, South Korea Gov. set a law that anyone has Chinese heritage cannot live closer than 100m. so they spread out and also they couldn't get any Chinese ingredient - no import what so ever. so they developed Chinese style Korean food.
Not many professionally trained Korean food chef in Edmonton (even in Canada) but he is. not only Chinese style food, he also does typical seasonal Korean food. my favorite is Cold noodle "Nang Myun" . it's very elastic, made from buckwheat, very typical summer dish. and Beef Rib Soup which is very popular after wedding ceremony.

but the best all around CHinese style korean food favorites are..
    1. Ja-Jang-Myun: korean style Blackbean sauce with pork on Noodle (rice option is also good)
    2. Jam-Pong: spicy see food noodle soup (rice option is also good)
    3. Tang Su Yuk: Sweet pork dish
    4. Gan Pung Gi: Syicy-sour chicken dish
    5. Man-Du: dumpling, so call KyoJa(Japanese style)

  4. This place uses MSG in everything, even the most basic or simple Korean dish

If you think this place is good with 'J'iang b'ong'

Then you'll be blown away by how good it is from a restaurant called Korean BBQ House
